The nominations for the 2019 Grammys were officially released Friday morning, and with the news comes both snubs and surprises.

This year, Kendrick Lamar leads the Grammy Awards nominations with eight nods for producing and curating the soundtrack for "Black Panther"; the track "All the Stars" by Lamar and SZA alone is up for four awards.

Brandon, Man. -raised violinist James Ehnes is nominated for classical instrumental solo for his concerto Kernis, while Toronto-born conductor Peter Oundjian also received a nod for classical compendium.

Women performers were underrepresented in the top four categories and in the awards broadcast at the Grammys earlier this year, but will have a strong presence at the upcoming show.

But the nominations also resulted in snubs for some of the music industry's biggest stars, such as Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake, among others.

The Recording Academy announced Lamar was the top contender with eight nominations, including seven for his musical companion to the Marvel Studios juggernaut starring Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan. The pop singer, raised in Pickering, Ont., was named in two categories - song of the year for In My Blood and best pop vocal album.

He will compete with Lamar in the hotly-contested Album of the Year category with his chart-topping release Scorpion.

Last year Jay-Z was nominated for eight awards including Album Of The Year and Song Of The Year, yet did not take home any of the honors. Lastly, their song "Apes***" also received a nomination for Best Music Video. Fellow Black Panther song "King's Dead" was nominated for Best Rap Performance and Rap Song. But West has only ever won big in smaller categories such as Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.

Demi Lovato, who relapsed after six years of sobriety and was hospitalized for an overdose in July, earned a nomination for best pop duo/group performance for "Fall In Line", her duet with Christina Aguilera. Rock band Greta Van Fleet and country singer Luke Combs also earned nominations.

- Best dance/electronic album: "Singularity", Jon Hopkins; "Woman Worldwide", Justice; "Treehouse", Sofi Tukker; "Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides", SOPHIE; "Lune Rouge", TOKiMONSTA.

Cardi is the only woman nominated in the rap categories, with social media now adding more fuel to the fire surrounding the highly publicized feud between her and Nicki Minaj.

The cover is for her album "Restoration: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin".
