Mobile phone network down across the Isle of Wight

Tens of millions of smartphone users in Britain lost internet access today after a software glitch brought down O2's data network. Other networks such as GiffGaff also operate under the telecom giant, meaning hundreds of thousands of people are without mobile data coverage.

It said: "Our technical teams are investigating reports of issues when using data".

02 has confirmed in a tweet that one of its third-party suppliers has identified a software issue in its system, which appears to be the cause of the fault.

The network outage has also affected Transport For London, which uses the O2 network for its electronic timetable displays at bus stops.

'We fully appreciate it's been a poor experience and we are really sorry'.

"We have been working hard on resolving the United Kingdom data issue since early this morning".

And while it hasn't been heavily reported, O2 and Softbank are not alone with this issue.

The company have so far not said anything about whether they would be giving customers compensation for the outage. "Our technical teams are working extremely hard to resolve this", the company said.

He said: "I want to reassure our customers that we are doing everything we can to fix the issue with our network and say how sorry I am to everyone affected".
