"Michael's decision to cooperate and take full responsibility for his own conduct well reflects his personal resolve, notwithstanding past errors, to re-point his internal compass true north toward a productive, ethical and thoroughly law abiding life", Cohen's lawyers wrote in the memorandum, noting that he'd "participated in seven voluntary interviews with the Special Counsel's Office" so far.

Cohen, 52, is to be sentenced by Judge William H. Pauley III on December 12 on the charges in both cases.

Since his plea agreement, Cohen has assisted federal prosecutors, including Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office, and the NY attorney general's office in its investigation into the Donald Trump Foundation. In that plea, Cohen implicated Trump in hush-money payments to two women during the 2016 campaign to hide affairs they said they had with Trump.

Prosecutors have said that next week they plan to reveal what they believe are lies Manafort told since he pleaded guilty in the Washington case in September and agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

Cohen's lawyers said that instead of keeping quiet and risking prison in the hope he'd get a presidential pardon, their client made a decision to work with prosecutors. The government is also expected to file a sentencing memo. "For you, it's a future president Trump". He also pointed out that the former Trump attorney has a history of secretly tape recording conversations.

In July, a report by The New York Times revealed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had recordings of President Trump discussing hush money payments for a former Playboy model Karen McDougal.

A prosecutor from Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office told a judge on November 30 that prosecutors have not yet decided whether to file new charges against Manafort.

Threaded throughout the document were testimonials from people closest to Cohen - drawn from some three dozen letters that were also submitted - depicting an image of generosity that undercuts the public perceptions of him since his guilty plea.

The document provides the first on-the-record glimpse of much of what has been reported to have taken place between Cohen and Trump in relation to arranging for payments made to two women who claimed to have previously had affairs with Trump.

The memo notably depicts Cohen as an unsophisticated and flawed man who was trying to please an exacting, demanding and powerful boss - Trump.

Cohen had pleaded guilty in August to five counts of tax evasion, one count of making a false statement to a bank and two campaign finance violations, admitting at that time he and the chief executive of a media company worked in the summer of 2016 to keep an individual from publicly disclosing information that could hurt Trump's campaign.

Cohen's lawyers sought to address speculation over why their client has not entered into a formal cooperation agreement with prosecutors, saying Cohen was concerned that such a deal would delay his sentencing.

However, the lawyers admit, Cohen remained in contact with Russian Federation months after the campaign claimed it cut off communications, even making moves for Trump to travel to Russian Federation that summer.

"Michael regrets that his vigor in Client-1's interests in the heat of political battle led him to abandon good judgment and cross legal lines", they said.
