The disciplinary committee will decide whether to disqualify River Plate, force the second leg to be played behind closed doors, or transfer the match to a neutral stadium, possibly one in the Paraguayan capital, Asuncion.

After a similar incident in the 2015 Libertadores semi-final, in which Boca fans threw tear gas on River players in the tunnel, the game was abandoned, and River were handed their place the final by decree of the federation.

The match had been scheduled for Saturday but the two presidents agreed to delay the continental showpiece by 24 hours after some Boca players suffered cuts from broken glass and the effects of smoke inhalation when their bus came under fire from River fans throwing sticks and stones and spraying pepper spray. "My love for the club aside, there are rules that must be respected", Maradona wrote on his social media on Monday.
