Democrats pick up another House seat in California with Walters concession

California Congressman Kevin McCarthy has defeated Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan for House Minority Leader in the new Congress. McCarthy now serves as House Majority Leader, which will change in January after Democrats took control of the lower chamber on Election Day.

House Republicans chose Rep. Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) for the role of House minority leader on Wednesday, and elevated Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) to GOP conference chairperson. McCarthy's supporters see him as an effective strategist and fundraiser.

In the House, a group of Democratic lawmakers are determined to ensure Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi doesn't become Speaker in January.

Fischer already serves as an informal counselor on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's leadership team, The Hill noted.

"When I see women, and women and men of color being elected to Congress, I feel a sense of pride in America".

Trump, who is close to McCarthy but also friendly with Jordan, largely stayed on the sidelines in the intraparty House contest. But since his election, he has changed course, saying instead the money must come from Congress and USA taxpayers.
