"New Zealand is the home of women's rugby, the Black Ferns captured our imaginations again when they won their fifth World Cup title previous year, and our entire country will get behind the tournament and all the teams participating in 2021", Ardern said in a statement from the South East Asia Economic Forum. "We know we're going to a country that delivers major events well. the 2011 Rugby World Cup, a British and Irish Lions tour a year ago... these guys know how to do it".

Rugby Australia were confident of securing the rights to become the first southern hemisphere nation to host the tournament after securing $10m in government funding - $7m more than what was promised to New Zealand.

"It's huge for the country - another major worldwide event coming to New Zealand and a chance to execute an outstanding tournament".

"Minister Grant Robertson has been supportive, in fact quite demanding, I wasn't looking forward to seeing him if we hadn't have won", Tew said.

"If I was a Kiwi I would think it's coming home".

"We do believe that will be a great opportunity because we feel that's an untapped potential, they're (the Pacific nations) not often in the World Cup so it will be a great opportunity for them to develop".
