It was later confirmed through The Associated Press through a family attorney.

"How many millions of us are indebted to this guy, none more so than me", the Spider-Man star wrote in an Instagram post, accompanied by a photo of Holland and Lee captured during the Spider-Man: Homecoming press tour.

"Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created". "The scale of his imagination was only exceeded by the size of his heart".

Lee created the Marvel Universe that stretched across comic books, movies and TV, and revitalized the comic industry with superheroes who had complex emotional lives to go along with their action adventures.

Before Lee, heroes like Superman in competitor DC Comics were almost flawless and didn't have the same concerns as ordinary people. Lee graduated from high school at the age of 16. Popular Marvel films include "The Avengers" and its various sequels, "Black Panther" and "Iron Man". Many bid him farewell with his catchphrase. He was always in some sort of trouble. "He paved the road for me and other creators for more than half a century", said DC chief creative officer and publisher Jim Lee.

The legendary editor and publisher, whose countless Marvel Comics creations spawned an entertainment empire, was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York City in 1922. His books tackled the news of the day, including politics and the Vietnam War, also something not really touched on in comics before.

Pittsburgh native Joe Manganiello, who started his acting career playing Flash Thompson in the 2002 movie "Spider-Man", was among those mourning, saying, "You will be missed my friend".

There is a cliche fed to people whenever a great personality dies. Stan Lee was a pioneering force in the superhero universe.

Marvel paid tribute to Mr Lee, calling him the "creator, voice and champion" of the company.

While there has always been debate regarding how responsible both Lee and Kirby were in the creation of these iconic, and very lucrative, characters, it is hard to deny that Lee played a large part in bringing this modern era of realism and grit to the comic book world.

In 2008, President George W. Bush presented Lee with the American National Medal of the Arts.

"Thank you Stan Lee for making people who feel different realize they are special", wrote actor Seth Rogen. 'Dad, can I ever have another few bucks?' And I say, 'Are you sure you'll be left with enough?' But there's no problem. "I'd like to be remembered while I'm alive, that would be nice".

With Stan at its helm, Timely Comics morphed first into Atlas Comics and then into the name that would catapult it into legend and forever be synonymous with Stan Lee: Marvel Comics.
