Danny Welbeck "broke something in his ankle" during Arsenal's Europa League draw with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday, according to head coach Unai Emery.

Welbeck required oxygen and had to be stretchered off the field after landing awkwardly on his ankle after he contested a header in Sporting's box.

The Gunners are yet to confirm the exact nature of the issue, although it appears the forward is set to miss several months.

But it would be fair to say that there are fears that he will not kick another ball this season and possibly ever again for Arsenal. "He's in hospital now and we'll see what happens", defender Rob Holding said.

"The worst news tonight are these injuries", Emery said. A good lad and a good friend.
