The Democratic nominee is Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum. He was the first African American to be nominated for governor, and he ran as an unabashed liberal. And on the eve of the election, Kemp opened an investigation into the Georgia Democratic Party for possibly tampering with the state's voter registration system. Additionally, his campaign cut ties with a volunteer during the final weeks of the race, after the volunteer was caught on video calling Florida a "cracker" state and saying the campaign was taking advantage of "white guilt". That could potentially add 1.4 million people to the voter rolls. In some states, a governor's power to sign or veto congressional maps could decide the partisan balance.

Voters who cast provisional ballots have until Thursday at 5 p.m.to verify their ID or provide other data to county officials to make their ballots count.
