Witnesses described a chaotic scene as panicked patrons smashed windows to get out.

Sgt. Ron Helus had been set to retire in the next year from the Ventura County, California Sheriff's Office when, responding late Wednesday to a call of a shooting, he walked into the Borderline Bar & Grill.

"We have no idea if there is a terrorism link or not", Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters.

The Los Angeles Times quoted a law enforcement official as saying that at least 30 shots were fired inside the bar.

The killer used a.45 caliber handgun during the attack, according to authorities, the AP reported.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area.

Less than two weeks after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting that killed 11, another mass shooting has taken a dozen lives in California. "That's never going to happen - all because of the stupid choice that killer made that robbed so many people of hearing Justin Meek's attractive voice". That, in turn, closely followed the series of pipe bombs mailed to critics of President Donald Trump.

Dean said Long had previous run-ins with police, including one instance in April where he acted "a little irrationally".

She said she had planned to go with them but stayed behind to do some schoolwork instead. Helus was shot multiple times upon entering the bar and later died at a hospital.

Authorities say multiple people - at least 11 - were injured in the shooting, including one officer, though the extent of the injuries wasn't immediately known.

The shooting happened on college night.

On Wednesday night, students gathered for college country night between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the bar's website. Three people were seen carrying someone, and later paramedics applied bandages to the man, who has blood on his back.

He said the only weapon found in an initial sweep was a handgun.
