Alan Shearer believes the Football Association's decision to recall Wayne Rooney to the England squad has reduced next week's global friendly with the United States to a testimonial.

DC United striker Wayne Rooney will make a shocking return for England in farewell appearance against the United States of America later this month.

This month's global friendly with U.S. offers the flawless opportunity for Rooney to make a one-off return in the fund-raising game at Wembley, and the FA have now confirmed that Southgate will include him in his forthcoming squad. I would like to thank Gareth Southgate and The FA for inviting me back and helping to support my Foundation in the process.

Rooney, 33, scored 53 goals for England, more than any other player in history, in 119 appearances for his country, ended his global career in 2017 and moved to America to join DC United in June.

Rooney said: "I am truly humbled and hugely excited to play for England at Wembley again". It should be the greatest honour and reward playing for your country but the reality is that the MLS is nowhere near the same level as the Premier League.

Said Fleischer: "In the aftermath people with exaggerate its meaning and in 2 years' time everything will have changed". He also claimed, without evidence, that among the migrants "invading" the U.S. there are gang members and "bad people".

The 33-year-old is a record goalscorer for both Manchester United and England, has not played global football for almost two years.

He will not be a part of England's squad for a Nations League clash against Croatia at Wembley three days after the United States game.

He has scored 12 times for DC United since he joined the MLS side from Everton last summer, taking them from the bottom of the MLS to the play-offs.

The Wayne Rooney Foundation focuses on improving the lives of disadvantaged children. "Acknowledging the Three Lions legacy has been a major part of our journey with this current group of young players and Wayne Rooney is a hugely significant part of that history".
