United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has demanded an "immediate" halt to fighting in Yemen, as he warned that the country stands on a "precipice" and could face the world's "worst famine" for decades if violence continues unabated.

"An end to the conflict is. a much-needed step but it needs to be complemented with investment and governance of this country that puts the interest of the people at the center and the interest of the children at the core of politics", Cappelaere said.

"The Houthis largely overwhelmed many areas in Hodeidah with explosives and landmines based on experiences they gained from the Iranians", the statement said.

Turki al-Malki, a spokesman for the coalition, said in TV comments that no flights or worldwide aid efforts at the airport were affected by the airstrikes targeting the al-Dulaimi Air Base in Sanaa.

"Unfortunately, Amal is not the only Yemeni child suffering that fate", he told a news conference in Amman, Jordan.

Geert Cappelaere said in an interview that recent USA calls for a cease-fire are imperative to ending the almost four-year war, which pits a Saudi-led coalition against Iran-aligned rebels known as Houthis.

A Saudi-led coalition fighting Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen said Friday it bombed an air base adjacent to the Sanaa airport allegedly being used by the rebels to launch drone and ballistic missile attacks.

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, a special envoy for the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), appealed for an immediate ceasefire.

"We have watched the situation deteriorate to the point that Yemen is now on the brink of man-made starvation, and facing the worst cholera epidemic in the world in decades", Jolie added.

Later on Wednesday, Yemeni security and medical officials said an airstrike by a Saudi-led coalition killed five civilians and wounded eight more just south of Hodeida. The conflict is seen as a proxy war between Riyadh and Tehran. Peace negotiations collapsed this September, and despite calls for renewed talks, thousands of government troops are amassing around the Red Sea port of Hodeidah ahead of a renewed offensive.

Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in the war in 2015 to bolster Yemeni president Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi after the rebels took over the capital Sanaa.

According to a new report by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, a nonprofit conflict-research organization, the Saudi-led war has so far claimed the lives of around 56,000 Yemenis.
