A 66-year-old CT man kidnapped his infant son from Canada more than 31 years ago and raised him in America using fake names, federal prosecutors said.

In 1987, the two-year-old son of Lyneth Mann-Lewis was taken away, allegedly by the boy's father.

Jermaine Mann had been told his mother died when he was young, authorities said.

He appeared in a federal court in CT on Monday, charged with making false statements to the US Department of Housing by submitting false identification documents in his application for subsidised housing.

Once the USA charges are dealt with, Mann expected to be extradicted to Canada to face further prosecution. "It is common for the other parent to say that a mother or a father is dead", she said.

Lyneth says she cooked a meal for Jermaine at her hotel and they spent the night talking. "Believe that all things are possible".

Mann-Lewis was living outside Toronto, working with investigators from the Missing Children's Society of Canada and never giving up hope that her son would be found alive.

On Thursday, Mann-Lewis was informed that U.S. Marshals - using technology such as facial identification - had located her son living with his biological father outside of Hartford, Connecticut.

"And since his son is a victim in this case, we can't disclose any information about him", Department of Justice spokesman Thomas Carson said on Monday. "I wanted to feel if he was real", she said.

The investigation has involved multiple U.S. agencies, including HUD, the U.S. Marshals, the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration, as well as the Toronto Police Service and the RCMP. A forensic specialist then analyzed a photo of Mr. Mann alongside the driver's licence photo of a man named Hailee DeSouza, and determined that they were likely the same person.
