The Pentagon is sending 800 or more additional troops to the Southwest border in response to President Donald Trump's vow to use the military to block a caravan of Central American immigrants from entering the United States, a US official said.

On Friday, NBC reported the Trump Administration was drafting an executive order that would make it hard for migrants from Central America to gain asylum in the U.S.

President Donald Trump for the past week has been calling attention to the caravan heading by foot into southern Mexico, but it is still hundreds of miles from US soil.

A caravan of thousands of migrants from Central America, en route to the United States, makes its way to San Pedro Tapanatepec from Arriaga, Mexico October 27, 2018.

An estimated 1,700 migrants who were part of the caravan requested asylum after crossing the border into Mexico. It was unclear when the details will be made public.

Migrants traveling in a caravan through southern Mexico have rejected a proposal by President Enrique Pena Nieto that they apply for refugee status in the country and obtain benefits.

Mexico has offered temporary identification papers and jobs to migrants who register for asylum in the country, stepping up efforts to halt the advance of a US-bound caravan that has angered Washington.

The Department of Homeland Security earlier reported that a large migrant caravan is moving towards the USA through Mexico.

"To me it's bad because there has to be equality because we are all struggling on this path", Hector Alvarado, 25, told NBC News.

The group said women religious have accompanied such groups in the past and would continue to do so and welcome them.

Central American migrants rest in the municipality of Arriaga, state of Chiapas, Mexico, on Friday.

"We know that civil rights attorneys are preparing to litigate right now", she said.

But after one of the caravan's longest days of walking and hanging from passing trucks, the bulk of the migrants were boisterous Friday evening in their refusal to accept anything less than safe passage to the US border.

After another brutally hot day on the road with her husband and 8-year-old son, Alejandra Rodriguez said the possibility of health care and a work permit in Mexico sounded enticing.

Nielsen said she was assured the argument did not occur. Only about 200 in that group made it to the border.
