US President Donald Trump calls for unity amid parcel bomb scare

Law enforcement agencies have found a dozen apparent explosive devices sent to prominent Democrats and targets of conservative vitriol over the past week.

The devices all were sent to an Federal Bureau of Investigation lab in Virginia to be studied.

The widespread mailing of suspected bombs to top officials and a news organization has little precedent in U.S. history, but resembles terrorism with its seemingly political bent.

All the confirmed bombs appeared to come from the same person or persons, said John Miller, New York Police Department's head of intelligence and counter-terrorism, who briefed reporters in New York.

CNN has said it also evacuated its NY offices over a suspicious package. The CNN package was addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan, who has publicly clashed with Trump and is a regular television contributor.

Clinton was the target of one of the bombs sent this week, which was intercepted during a routine off-site mail screening.

U.S. Democratic leaders in Congress said Trump's call for unity rang "hollow" because of his past statements condoning acts of violence.

The official said the White House is taking the situation "extremely seriously". Officials "proactively detonated" the device, and determined that it contained explosive powder and "had the components of a bomb".

NY police confirmed to AFP that its officers had been called to the Time Warner Center to investigate reports of a suspicious package.

Balboni said investigators will now examine each device's signature and the materials used in an attempt to locate the perpetrator.

A suspicious package was sent to the Florida office of Democratic Rep.

Among the signatories were former press workers for CNN, ABC and Los Angeles Times.
