The Queen is said to be deeply saddened after her last corgi, who followed her from room to room at Buckingham Palace, died last week. Though Whisper's death marks the end of an era, it can certainly be said that the Queen's corgis lived the most lavish and well-loved of canine lives, from their homemade meals prepared by the Queen's chefs to the stockings she reportedly fills for each dog at Christmas.

Whisper is understood to have fallen ill some weeks ago, according to the Daily Mail, but was well enough to travel back from Scotland to Windsor at the end of the Queen's summer break.

A source revealed to the Mail: "Whisper was a friendly chap and followed her everywhere. says a source".

The Queen agreed to take him in in 2016 after the death of his owner, former Sandringham gamekeeper Bill Fenwick. Mr Fenwick's late wife Nancy was known as the "keeper of the Queen's corgis" and always looked after the royal pets when Her Majesty was away on tours.

The 12-year-old had originally been called Wispa after the chocolate bar but the Queen was said to have found that "too obscure" and she changed to the regular spelling.

"She couldn't resist Whisper and now she has asked Bill's family if she can keep him", a source told The Sun previous year.

An insider shared at the time: "She has mourned every one of her corgis over the years, but she has been more upset about Willow's death than any of them". But a number of corgis, including Willow, died from cancer-related illnesses.

All her subsequent corgis - apart from Whisper - can trace their lineage back to Susan, and the Queen became an expert on the breed.

Susan, an 18th birthday gift from her father, went on honeymoon with her in 1947, while dogs Willow, Monty and Holly appeared with the Queen and Daniel Craig in the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony James Bond sketch.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment when contacted by Sky News.
