Trump has repeatedly declined to say if Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was behind or aware of the killing as many US officials and foreign governments have concluded, in part because numerous crown prince's associates were involved in the killing.

Saudi Arabia said it has arrested 18 Saudis and that several top intelligence officials were fired over Khashoggi's death. Erdogan, during the course of his speech, did not mention the name of Saudi Arabia's crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and instead referred only to the Saudi king.

President Donald Trump called the killing of Washington-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi "one of the worst cover-ups in the history of cover-ups" while speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

Turkish officials say President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Saudi prince have discussed what they said were "the need for joint efforts to shed light on all aspects of on the killing".

When asked about the possible role of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the president replied: "Well, the prince is running things over there more so at this stage".

Saudi Arabia's powerful crown prince has called the killing of Jamal Khashoggi a "heinous crime that can not be justified".

Khashoggi killers will be held accountable: Saudi
Democratic Representative Adam Schiff of California said Saudi Arabia's claim that Mr Khashoggi died in a brawl was not credible. Trump has been criticized for his response to Khashoggi's killing at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul.

First, Saudi officials said Khashoggi left the embassy unharmed, but after 17 days, following grisly news reports of Khashoggi's death, Saudi officials said last Friday that he was killed during an altercation inside the consulate.

Erdogan also revealed a local co-conspirator helped the Saudi team dispose of Khashoggi's body, which contradicts previous claims that it was flown to Saudi Arabia.

Prince Mohammed accused unidentified critics of trying to use the case to "drive a wedge" between Saudi Arabia and Turkey and pledged that this would not happen as long as his father is king and he is the crown prince.

Khashoggi, known for his criticism of Saudi policies, was working as a columnist for The Washington Post.

Turkey says Khashoggi was killed in a planned murder at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul earlier this month.

"We know that many are trying to use this painful thing to create a kind of wedge between Saudi Arabia and Turkey", he said.

The Saudi government has said Khashoggi died in a fist fight but Canada and other countries say Riyadh's explanation lacks credibility and are calling for a detailed investigation.

As part of that probe, Turkish police in Istanbul have been granted permission to search a well in the garden of the Saudi consulate, broadcaster NTV said on Wednesday. Mr Erdogan made no reference to any audio recording.
