President Donald Trump has praised a Republican congressman for assaulting a reporter who asked him a question on the eve of a special election previous year. "He's a great guy, tough cookie".

On Biden challenging him to a fight, Rep Trump said, "He'd be down, faster than Greg would take him down". "And we endorsed Greg very early, but I had heard he body-slammed a reporter".

He said the incident "runs the risk of inviting other assaults on journalists", coming at the same time as the alleged killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"The president of the United States tonight applauded the assault on an American journalist who works for the Guardian".

He added: "We hope decent people will denounce these comments and tht the president will see fit to apologise for them". Gianforte, a Republican elected Montana's congressman despite the violence, pleaded guilty past year to assault.

"In Washington he talks like he's from Montana and he votes like he's Nancy Pelosi", stated President Trump.

Some even suggested that Trump's controversial statements, allegedly calling for violence against journalists, might be the reason why the case of the missing journalist of Saudi descent Jamal Khashoggi is not being thoroughly investigated by the US. "We should never shrug at the president cheerleading for a violent act targeting a free and independent news media".
