The woman is reported to have left the location without checking to see if anyone was home or whom the child would be released to, "which placed the child in great danger". The child's father lives nearby.

Spencer said deputies canvassed the neighborhood when the child was found Wednesday night, but no one answered the door at the father's house.

Surveillance video that shows a Texas woman leave a friend's toddler alone on a stranger's doorstep is going viral after authorities posted the clip on social media.

It happened late Wednesday in the town of Spring, which is north of Houston, when the woman can be seen lifting the 2-year-old toddler by the arm and putting him on the porch, then ringing the doorbell and knocking.

Investigators said they aren't sure why the woman ran away. The entire incident took 23 seconds.

Sheriff's deputies later said that they had identified her, but refused to share the woman's name after confirming that she had indeed been a victim of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

The child was abandoned at the door with two bags. Child Protective Services responded to the scene and took custody of the child, but he was later reunited with his father.

The sheriff's office said the child appeared to be in good health. She left without verifying anyone was home or who she was leaving the child with. Instead, she asked a friend to drop her boy off.

"The caller advised that she heard her doorbell and a knock at the door", Lt. Scott Spencer said Thursday.

She hopped back into the white auto she was filmed arriving in and drove away.

Child Protective Services will ultimately decide who will have custody of the child.

But the 2-year-old wasn't dropped off in the afternoon, and the father eventually left his house.

It is too early in the investigation to know if the mom will face charges, Spencer said, but he emphasized that she turned her child over to someone who she believed was a responsible adult.
