This mammoth deal, which will span 5 years and 10 fights, is being called "the highest paid guaranteed contract in sports history" by Canelo's promoter Golden Boy Promotions.

Domestically, the previous contract high for an athlete was the 13-year, $325 million dollar pact signed by Giancarlo Stanton with the Miami Marlins.

His next fight will be against Rocky Fielding at New York's Madison Square Garden on December 15 and the Guadalajara native has a strong chance of being named Forbe's Richest Athlete in 2019, particularly if a third bout with Golovkin materialises.

Its early success across Europe and Asia was followed by launches in Canada (2017), Italy (2018) and the United States (2018), where DAZN announced blockbuster deals with Matchroom Boxing and Bellator MMA to deliver a stacked slate of fight sports content upon entry into the market.

In the post-Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao era, Alvarez emerged as boxing's biggest star on the pay-per-view fight circuit.

The agreement is part of a broader deal between DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions, the fight organization founded by former champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya.

German police suspect hostage has been taken in Cologne
Police Special forces are seen at the hostage-taking at the main railway station in Cologne, western Germany, on October 15, 2018. Ambulances and heavily-armed police were lined up behind the train station, the daily Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger reported.

"The December fight with Fielding is a unsafe fight", he said.

"Adding this exclusive arrangement with Golden Boy and its quality roster of fighters to our Matchroom UK and Matchroom US fights gives us a year-long schedule of premium events for boxing fans".

The deal means that fight fans will only have to pay a US$9.99 per month subscription fee to watch Canelo on DAZN, compared to the US$80 HBO used to command for the 28-year-old's pay-per-view (PPV) fights.

'I don't have much more to say other than his experience beat me and he is a great fighter.

"I've always liked a challenge, and this is yet another challenger in my career", said Canelo Alvarez. "DAZN has the ideal platform to make this dream come true, and with the biggest star in the sport at the helm of this journey, I have no doubts that we will succeed in unimaginable ways". Now Alvarez will seek to join a small and illustrious list of three-division world champions from Mexico as he steps up to 168 pounds to challenge Fielding. He has a 50-1-2 career record with 34 KOs.

The deal, which is for 11 fights, will see him earn a minimum of £278,148,250 over the next five years.
