There is a situation regarding the backlash of the disappearance of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi, who was a Saudi Arabian national who had been critical of aspects of the country in his reporting.

Sami Zayn, a male wrestler of Syrian descent, also did not appear, with many presuming it was due to strained relations between Saudi Arabia and Syrian - though no official reason was given.

WWE released a statement saying they are "currently monitoring the situation". The first WWE event was staged in April, but the big, appropriately titled "Crown Jewel" pay-per-view event is set for November 2 in Riyadh. The entertainment wrestling league held their first event in Saudi Arabia this past Spring, and Oliver stated that fans "around the world were treated to wall-to-wall propaganda about the new Saudi Arabia, including video showing women happily driving, men dancing, and tourist destination beauty shots, as well as constant excited compliments throughout the broadcast".
