British Isles brace for Storm Callum as powerful gusts hit Ireland

A Met Office spokesman said: "As Storm Callum passes to the northwest of the United Kingdom, a period of heavy rain will affect South Wales during Friday, with further spells of persistent and heavy rain at times during Saturday".

National Rail said speed restrictions have also been brought in on the line until Monday in response to warnings of strong winds over the weekend.

Rail replacement coaches have been put on for passengers who have been affected but customers are being advised to avoid travelling today if possible.

"This event continues to be predominantly a coastal one, though some severe gusts moved inland, especially close to the squally cold front, as it pushed up over the country overnight".

Arriva Trains Wales and Great Western Railway have cancelled trains across Wales. Spray and flooding is also likely to lead to hard driving conditions and some road closures.

Ferry services between Wales and Northern Ireland and Dublin have been suspended. About 2,000 homes and businesses in England are without power, according to BBC News.

Met Office meteorologist Helen Roberts said: "There will be more wet and windy weather for similar parts of the country - predominantly western areas - which could cause more flooding".

The clouds and patchy rain will remain over the south-east corner of the United Kingdom until the early hours of Tuesday with a drier, cooler outlook expected for the week, he added.

The latest warnings come days after rain and strong winds brought flooding and transport disruption to parts of Scotland on Tuesday.
