Ireland's national forecaster Met Eireann has also warned of severe flooding along coasts.

Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders said: "Strong winds at this time of year can increase the rate of leaf fall which can potentially block drains or culverts and, with the heavy rainfall expected over Friday and Saturday, could well heighten the potential for flooding".

Winds will be strongest overnight and early on Friday, gusting between 110 and 130 km/h (80mph) at coasts.

Train services between Swansea and Carmarthen are being suspended during parts of Friday because of Storm Callum.

"The first swathe of storm force winds will reach southern coastal counties between 23:00 tonight and 01:00 on Friday morning", said Mr Nolan.

Met Office is urging people to be prepared for potential dangers with weather warnings in place as Storm Callum prepares to batter Northern Ireland on Friday.

Higher ground in the south and south west could see up to 100mm by the end of the day and the rain is expected to be accompanied by strong winds, gusting up to 60mph.

THE Met Office has upgraded its weather warning for later this week, predicting that an incoming storm could bring deep flood water.

Coming into effect at 10:00pm, the warning will expire at 9:00am tomorrow morning in these counties. Even though the high winds will be the main concern, a spell of heavy and possibly thundery rain will occur too, making for an extremely windy and wet start, with squally conditions associated with the secondary cold front as it tracks north-eastwards up across the country.

"We are going to get very high winds followed by a lot of rain and there could be some coastal surge". Winds of up to 130km are expected in coastal ares along with heavy rain and a risk of flooding.

While heavy rain is expected to continue into Saturday, the wind is now forecast to ease off by Friday evening. There is a chance of gusts of 70 to 80 miles per hour in the Western Isles during Friday afternoon and evening.
