The hurricane center's current forecast track shows the storm is expected to strengthen further and could hit the Florida Panhandle as a Category I hurricane on Wednesday. The storm is most likely to make a direct strike on Florida's Gulf Coast, but coastal Alabama and MS also may deal with direct storm effects and should monitor forecasts. "The system could become a hurricane by Tuesday night or Wednesday", the hurricane center's advisory said.

As of 1 p.m. ET Sunday, the storm was located 90 miles of Cozumel, Mexico, and had 40 mph winds.

Tropical storm warnings have been posted for western Cuba and Mexico's northeast Yucatan Peninsula, including Cancun. Should the storm stay east most of our area would be on the dry side similar to Gordon earlier this year. This disturbance will become Tropical Storm Michael later Sunday.

It urged people in the Yucatan Penninsula, western Cuba and the northern Gulf Coast to keep on the system.

Scott declared an emergency when it was Tropical Depression 14 on Sunday morning.
