Hopkins allegedly began shooting at Florence County deputies when they showed up to serve a search warrant for another individual at the residence Wednesday.

Authorities said the gunman, Fred Hopkins, is a Vietnam veteran who opened fire as officers came to the house to serve a search warrant.

As the suspect barricaded himself in the home with children, authorities used a mine-resistant ambush protected, or MRAP, vehicle - something usually associated with war zones - to get all the wounded officers to safety, Boone said.

It was not clear exactly how the confrontation ended.

Authorities identified the shooter in the Wednesday night incident as 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins.

Police are referring to the shooting as an "ambush", telling reporters on Friday that Hopkins knew deputies of the Florence County sheriff's office were coming to his home to interview his 28-year-old adopted son, Seth Hopkins, related to an ongoing criminal sexual assault investigation. "I just love the smell of gunpowder in the mornin's", the post said. The filing does not elaborate on the injury.

Florence County Emergency Management urged residents to stay away from the Vintage Place subdivision at first because the shooter was still active.

"Fire was being shot all over", Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said. He noted that the suspect's "view of fire" gave him a crucial "advantage" over the officers, and mean that responding units "couldn't get to the ones who were down".

In addition to Richland County investigators, assets of the Lexington County sheriff's department and Colleton County sheriff's office are assisting in the investigation.

Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler estimated Thursday that it took a half-hour to reach some of the wounded officers.
