She was also seen wearing a pair of her favorite Manolo Blahnik heels first thing in the morning - however she changed out of the sky high pumps and into the low-cost flats by the time she reached the 17th Century castle, no doubt in order to ensure she could enjoy the walking tour without worrying about her feet.

So Melania, still making infrequent public appearances on her own in the United States, much less overseas, has stepped up to the plate.

From the airport, Trump traveled to Accra's Ridge Hospital and watched babies being weighed, part of an initiative funded by the United States to advocate nutrition in children.

The first lady is on a solo tour of Africa.

The first lady spent a few minutes meeting privately with her guide, Kwesi Essel-Blankson, and getting an introductory history of the castle before they emerged into an open area in 80-degree heat and humidity.

A relaxed-looking Trump smiled and waved as she stepped off an overnight flight from Washington to be met on the red carpet by her Ghanaian counterpart Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

The first ladies met privately for about a half-hour at Jubilee House, Ghana's presidential palace.

Eight-year-old Lillian Naa Adai Sai welcomed Mrs. Trump to Accra, Ghana, with a kente-cloth-wrapped bouquet of flowers as Trump departed the plane.

In June, she made a surprise visit to Texas to visit detained children at the Mexican border, wearing a jacket emblazoned with the words "I really don't care". Other locals said they knew about the visit but didn't know what Trump was doing.

She was met by her Ghanaian counterpart Rebecca Akufo-Addo and a group of local schoolchildren in yellow and brown uniforms waving the U.S. stars and stripes and the Ghanaian flag. Mrs. Trump gifted Akufo-Addo with a silver Chippendale tray on which was etched the image of the White House.

But unlike her predecessors, her visit will be followed closely to see if she can build bridges after the president reportedly dismissed Africa as a collection of "shithole countries".

The president later tweeted: "Proud of our great First Lady - and she loves doing this!"

The first lady's visit to Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and Egypt has been seen as an attempt to carve her own path and emerge from her husband's shadow and his divisive presidency.
