For the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, the German tactician voted the Croat as his best player of the year.

The Fifa Fan Award went to Peru's supporters who caused absolute scenes (in a good way) in Russian Federation this summer as the national team made their way to their first World Cup tournament in 36 years.

Neither of the two former winners attended the otherwise star-studded event at Royal Festival Hall. "And for this I am happy that people recognise me as the best for this year".

Modric was the inspirational skipper who was the driving force in Croatia's fairytale run to the World Cup final, where they came up short against a powerful French outfit.

"Of course we can win our fourth straight [Champions League title], nobody believed we could win the third and here it is".

France's World Cup-winning manager Didier Deschamps took the Men's Coach of the Year award, with compatriot Reynald Pedros claiming the women's award after winning the Champions League with Lyon. Messi voted for Modric, while Ronaldo and Modric each voted for Real Madrid's Raphael Varane.

Modric picked up 29 percent of the votes, ahead of Ronaldo (19 percent), Mohamed Salah (11.2 percent), Kylian Mbappe (10 percent) and Messi (9 percent).

The Croatian midfielder would also be presented with the night's top award, being named the Best FIFA Men's Player of 2018.
