Psychologist Timothy Foley, testifying for the defence, said that the risk of Cosby re-offending was "extraordinarily low".

But judge Steven O'Neill denied a request for bail pending an appeal and ordered he be jailed immediately.

"Mr. Cosby is not unsafe", he said. Defence lawyers will likely point to Cosby's age, frailty and failing vision.

When his punishment was read, Cosby appeared not to react.

After much debate yesterday, both the defense and prosecution came to an agreement that Cosby would only face a maximum of ten years by merging all three felony counts into one for the sake of a swift sentencing.

Steel said that Cosby has "been able to hide his true self" for decades.

Cosby was escorted out of the courtroom in handcuffs as he held onto his walking cane following the sentencing. "As she [Constand] said, Mr. Cosby, you took her lovely, healthy young spirit and crushed it".

Prosecutors asked for a sentence of five to 10 years in prison. So Mr Cosby is doing fine. He said, "They persecuted Jesus and look what happened".

Hughley retweeted several tweets saying that Cosby got a harsh sentence because he is black.

The sentence means that after three years, Cosby would be eligible to be released on parole.

Cosby's sentence came just hours after O'Neill ruled that the convicted comedian is a "sexually violent predator", a designation that includes registration as a sex offender and lifelong notification and counseling requirements.

Standoff Has Kavanaugh Accuser's Senate Appearance in Limbo
But in an email late Saturday, Keyser attorney Howard Walsh told the committee she "does not know Mr. Kavanaugh and she has no recollection" of ever attending a gathering with Kavanaugh.

Cosby cemented his family-friendly reputation playing the mischievous but lovable Dr. Cliff Huxtable in the 1980s sitcom "The Cosby Show". He says the comedian's lawyers wouldn't let him discuss certain matters, including the sexual assault that led to his conviction or his admission that he gave quaaludes to women before sex.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said the 81-year-old used his fame and fortune to "hide his true self and hide his crimes", intimidating his victims into keeping them silent for decades. Constand then pursued a civil lawsuit against the entertainer that was settled for $3.4 million.

The claims are similar to those of over 60 other women who have also accused Cosby of assault.

Cosby did not testify at the trial and has spoken publicly only infrequently since his criminal trial began.

Constand, who is now a massage therapist in Canada, testified during the trial in April and in an earlier trial previous year that ended with a hung jury, that she had become friends with Cosby, and viewed him as a mentor. When she took the pills, she became unconscious.

Outside the courthouse, Cosby supporter and Norristown resident Mariann Tokarchik, advocated for house arrest. "I was frozen", she told the jury.

Cosby's first trial in 2017 ended with a hung jury.

For one, the #MeToo movement had been unleashed, toppling bad-behaving men whose abuse had previously been kept secret. That was four more women than the judge permitted during the first trial. This is not unusual, say legal experts, when multiple charges stem from the same event.

When the women took the witnesses stand, a pattern emerged. Other women, who accused Cosby of assaults dating back to the 1960s, championed Ms Constand's case and supported her in court, being unable to pursue their own historic cases owing to the time passed.

They also challenged accuser Janice Baker-Kinney's delayed accusation. "Nothing could have prepared me for an evening of January 2004, when life as I knew it came to an abrupt halt", Constand wrote, referring to the time of the attack. Let us know what you think!

"Your honor, I have testified", Constand said.

Afterwards, Green proceeded to defend Cosby.
