Serena Williams calls out tennis coach claims

Serena Williams sat down for an interview with Australian presenter Lisa Wilkinson just three days after her US Open controversy.

The 23-time grand slam champion caused uproar two weeks ago when she lost the final in straight sets after a fiery confrontation with chair umpire Carlos Ramos that she later blamed on sexism.

The drama started when Ramos handed Williams a coaching violation early in the second set because of hand gestures made from the stands by her coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

Serena Williams does not understand why her coach admitted giving her instructions from the sidelines during her controversial US Open women's final. We've never had signals.

"That doesn't make sense". He said he made a motion, and I said, 'Okay, so you made a motion and now you're telling people you were coaching me?

"For me I feel like we should lift each other up and support each other, and not tear each other down, and that's something I've always tried to do", Williams said. Is she sending me a message that she is not my friend, don't try and pretend I am your friend, and can everyone just hurry it the f**k up? Given how big of a moment that was, how big of a match that was, I think it was amplified. "I'm just trying to recover from that and just move on".

Williams was fined over $13,000 for her actions but now is content to move on from the whole incident.

Williams also talked to "The Project" about the three violations she received that contributed to her loss to Japan's Naomi Osaka. "I hope it's not the case (that there is gender bias) but I think what happened, obviously there were mistakes along the way and there should be more discretion sometimes", he said.

'So this would be a good opportunity for me kind of to see where I am and just hopefully continue to go forward'. You stole a point from me.

The interview was ostensibly for Williams to discuss a breast cancer awareness campaign she is fronting in association with her sponsor, Berlei, but Wilkinson had to tackle the elephant in the room. You know, I'm human.

"I think as a great umpire - you obviously have to be a good umpire to be in the finals - you should also be aware that this is the situation".

Serena Williams has opened up on her infamous US Open meltdown, saying she's doing "okay, not great" and that her young daughter Olympia brought immediate perspective to the situation.

Following the interview, Wilkinson revealed to her co-hosts that she was told to steer clear of asking the US star about Mark Knight's controversial cartoon published in the wake of the US Open.

When the violation was announced Williams approached Ramos to insist she never takes coaching and would rather lose than "cheat to win".
