The longest week: Carolinas worn out by Florence

More than 8,100 North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia residents, forced to evacuate, are still living in Red Cross shelters or with family and friends. While Florence caused substantial damage to structures and resulted in the loss of power to thousands of people when it first made landfall, the storm's after-effects are even worse.

S.C. drivers have been frustrated all week as one of the state's main highways has shut down, then re-opened, then shut again due to hurricane-related flooding.

Social media users have been sharing before and after pictures of the storm's destruction on Twitter.

In South Carolina, meanwhile, crop damage was estimated at $125 million so far, Gov. Henry McMaster wrote Thursday to the state's congressional delegation.

Residents in Georgetown County, South Carolina, where five rivers flow into the ocean, will prepare on Friday for a deluge of water in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, which has killed more than 40 people. "We've never seen one like this. a storm like no other".

Officials in North and SC warn that the flooding danger is far from over, with SC also ordering more evacuations as rivers rise.

At Fayetteville, about 100 miles inland, near the Army's sprawling Fort Bragg, flooding from Cape Fear River got so bad that authorities closed a vehicle bridge after the water began touching girders supporting the span's top deck.

North Carolina governor Roy Cooper says the state is still tallying its storm damage, but says it will be in the billions.

On the Cape Fear River, Duke Energy said Friday that a dam containing a large lake at Wilmington, N.C. power plant has been breached by floodwaters from Florence, and it's possible coal ash from an adjacent dump is flowing into the water. In a letter he said the flooding will be the worst disaster in the state's modern history. The National Hurricane Center said it was monitoring four areas in the Atlantic for signs of a new tropical weather threat.
