Heavyweight championship boxing returns today, as three-belt heavyweight world titleholder Anthony Joshua will step into the ring to defend his titles against the risky Alexander Povetkin.

Earlier, RunningManKillian tweeted: "Imagine if Povetkin decks Joshua and doesn't even bother to see Salisbury Cathedral while he's over here?"

Another right-left combination downed Povetkin, who somehow made the count, only to stagger into a left hook which saw him slump into the ropes, leaving referee Steve Gray with no option but to intervene.

"I got my knockout streak back, I found my right hand again".

Both men had won Olympic gold medals, but it was the youthful energy of the 28-year-old Joshua which proved decisive as Povetkin visibly exhausted halfway through the contest.

Povetkin started the stronger of the two, landing some crucial blows and causing Joshua to bleed heavily from the nose with a shot that left the Watford-native wobbling.

"I'm sure you know this, I can tell by the way you look at him".

Back at the stadium where beat the great Wladimir Klitschko in an 11-round thriller a year ago, Joshua again went to the trenches against a high-class opponent.

Klitschko was the only man to have previously inflicted a blemish on Povetkin's now 36-fight record, with a points win back in 2013.

If with Joshua's past two fights there was a frustration that he did not defeat Carlos Takam and Joseph Parker as convincingly as he would have hoped, there is also the reality that, similarly to Klitschko, they are yet to recover from those defeats.

Joshua and Fury are both from England, but Saturday's major fight figures to completely overshadow the announcement of Wilder-Fury.

Povetkin, 39, served notice of his punching power on the undercard of that bout, with a sickening knockout of Britain's David Price.

Should Joshua beat the former WBA (Regular) title holder, he will set up a showdown with the victor of the WBC title fight between champion Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.
