Trump wants Spain to build a wall in Africa to stop migrants

Donald Trump suggested building a wall across the Sahara desert to solve Europe's migration crisis, a Spanish politician has claimed.

Comparatively, the US-Mexico border spans roughly 3,200km.

Spanish diplomats, however, pointed out that the Sahara Desert stretched for 3,000 miles.

Borrell made the remarks in a speech Tuesday during a lunch at Club Siglo XXI in Madrid, in reference to the expected massive growth in the number of young Africans seeking work in the next two decades. Borrell had accompanied Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia to the White House in June.

"While we can confirm that the President has discussed migration challenges with Spanish interlocutors, we do not have record of this specific comment", a senior White House official told CNN.

Florence's floods obscure damage inflicted on Carolinas
Florence is expected to unload a total of 10 trillion gallons of rain on North Carolina, meteorologist Ryan Maue said. Meanwhile, the city of Wilmington had been largely cut off from the rest of North Carolina by rising floodwaters from Florence.

Trump's plan for a border wall along the US-Mexico border has encountered many obstacles in US Congress.

They are situated a considerable distance north of the Morocco/Algeria border - across which the Sahara lies. As Spain is located in Europe and the Sahara is located in Africa, building such a wall would also require it to be constructed on foreign territory.

Although he declined further comments on the issue, a spokesman for the Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed Borrell's comments to CNN.

The European country has seen over 30,000 migrants and refugees arrive by sea so far in 2018, making Spain the top destination for migrants arriving via the Mediterranean.

Spain's politicians have agreed a solution needs to be found to deal with the migration crisis, with Africa's population set to double in the next 20 years.
