"We see Amazon as having to invest between $0.5 billion and $3 billion in building these 3,000 stores", analysts led by Brian Nowak wrote Thursday.

Amazon is considering opening as many as 3,000 locations of its cashierless stores across the U.S. by 2021, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

One major hurdle, however, would be the cost - Bloomberg's sources said the first Amazon Go store needed more than $1 million worth of hardware. Los Angeles and NY have already been rumoured as cities to host Amazon Go stores.

The American ecommerce giant was said last night to be considering a wider expansion of Amazon Go, a concept grocery shop that has no cashiers and uses an artificially intelligent motion-tracking system to record what shoppers buy. Once inside, cameras and sensors track what they pick up from the shelves and what they put back.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Research firm eMarketer predicts that Amazon will control more than 4 percent of the USA digital advertising market by the end of this year.

By rolling out 3,000 Amazon Go stores, Amazon would quickly become one of the biggest chains in the US, Bloomberg said.

Speculation of a widespread rollout of Amazon Go isn't the first time the company has been rumored to have plotted a massive expansion into brick-and-mortar stores. The shares rose about 1 percent to $1,942.82 at 10:41 NY.

To start shopping, customers must scan an Amazon Go smartphone app and pass through a gated turnstile. "I also think Amazon is fully aware that Whole Foods is not necessarily the complete solution to their bricks-and-mortar", Wolfe Research analyst Scott Mushkin said earlier this week at a Supermarket News roundtable discussion. Meanwhile, the 2,000-square-foot Chicago store marks the first Amazon Go outside Amazon's hometown of Seattle.

Amazon Go is going national. With 3,000 stores to its name, Amazon would stand to take a sizable bite of that pie.

Amazon Go will be more of a threat to fast-casual restaurants if it is targeting cities, said Jeff Lenard, vice president of NACS. If it's a quarter mile from where people are walking and biking, the novelty of the technology won't matter.
