"Any issues that have come up have been turned over to the people that do the background investigations and we'll see what they come up with", Leahy said at the time. So do they want to have the hearing or not?

Calling for the FBI "to reopen and complete the background investigation", Feinstein drew comparisons to the hearings that were held after Hill's allegations against Thomas surfaced in 1991. "There's a lot of things that I've done when I was a teenager that I'm certainly ashamed of and not proud of", he said. Dianne Feinstein received a letter in July from Christine Blasey Ford alleging the assault, but word of it only leaked Friday. At the time, Kavanaugh was a student at the all-boys Georgetown Preparatory School-and, according to Ford, was aided in the assault by his classmate Mark Judge. By the time he testified in a second round of hearings, following Hill, he said, "From my standpoint, as a black American, as far as I'm concerned, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas".

Kavanaugh, who has flatly denied all the allegations, quickly accepted the invitation on Monday to appear before the committee again, saying in a statement: "I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity". After initially guarding her anonymity, Ford "decided to take control of this and tell this in her own voice" after the allegations were leaked, her lawyer said. And she deserves to be heard. "She is now being given an opportunity to come before the Senate Judiciary Committee to answer questions, and I really hope that she doesn't pass up that opportunity".

"To do better, the 2018 Senate Judiciary Committee must demonstrate a clear understanding that sexual violence is a social reality to which elected representatives must respond, " she said. "Brett Kavanaugh and I were friends in high school, but I do not recall the party described in Dr. Ford's letter", he said. Thursday's vote will not occur. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) that the committee should delay its vote pending an investigation, Leahy said, "That would make sense".

At one point, she said, Judge jumped on top of them, toppling them over allowing her to break free. The committee, chaired by Sen.

Ford, now a psychology professor at California's Palo Alto University, gave her description of her encounter with Kavanaugh to The Washington Post in an interview published Sunday. The Justice Department, for its part, argued in a statement late Monday that it is the FBI's responsibility to evaluate any threat Kavanaugh may pose to national security, but that Ford's claim "does not involve any potential federal crime" for the FBI to investigate.

With fragile GOP majorities of just 11-10 on the Judiciary committee and 51-49 in the full Senate, Republican leaders had little room for defectors without risking a humiliating defeat of Trump's nominee to replace retired Justice Anthony Kennedy.
