Amazon's "Maisel" is the first streaming series ever to win Best Comedy, and it's only the second hour-long show to take the prize, following "Ally McBeal" in 1999. "Mrs. Maisel" also won four other awards, including the best actress for Rachel Brosnahan.

Last year Lena Waithe made history by becoming the first African-American woman to win the comedy writing statue (she shared it with Aziz Ansari for "Master of None"), and she was the most recent female victor before Sherman-Palladino.

President Trump's least favorite TV show, "Saturday Night Live", picked up another Emmy for variety sketch series. He showed up with trophies for Jaleel White (yes, Steve Urkel himself), The Jeffersons' Marla Gibbs and Martin's Tichina Arnold, among others.

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" star was a frontrunner to win, boosted by her Golden Globe win for the role earlier in the year.

Hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost filled their opening and indeed much of what followed with a surplus of insider-ish jokes, about everything from sexual harassment to recent low ratings for the Emmys.

HBO and FX walked away with six and five awards, respectively, which kept streaming services from being the night's big story. Thandie Newton also won in the supporting actress in a drama series category for Westworld, but some of the actors of color for whom hopes were highest - Sandra Oh in Killing Eve, for instance - they didn't come to pass.

But the coveted drama prize went to "Game of Thrones", which was ineligible for last year's Emmys.

It won nine Emmys this year, meaning the blood-spattered tale of the battle for the Iron Throne - which returns in 2019 for an abbreviated eighth and final season - now has 47 awards overall.

HBO's "Game of Thrones," Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and FX's "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" were the night's big winners.

The Emmys had a real-life dramatic moment when winning director Glenn Weiss, noting his mother had died two weeks ago, proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. They may be the least charismatic "Weekend Update" team of the 21st century, and it showed in weak jokes about Netflix's mammoth budget and the Obamas making their own version of The Apprentice. A final big Emmy win would've been the ideal send-off for The Americans, and certainly one that's absolutely merited.
