Putin wants Russian Federation and Japan to seal historic peace deal

Russian Federation and Japan have not signed a peace treaty since World War II due to a lingering territorial dispute over parts of a group of Pacific islands known in Japan as the Northern Territories and in Russian Federation as the Kurils.

Speaking at the economic conference in Vladivostok earlier on Wednesday Abe said he and Putin share an opinion "that this is not normal" that the two countries still have not signed a peace treaty.

Abe reiterated his desire to meet Kim himself to resolve the matter of Japanese citizens kidnapped by Pyongyang's agents decades ago, but said nothing had been decided yet.

A former Russian deputy foreign minister, Georgy Kunadze, said he doubted Putin wanted to solve the territorial problem in earnest.

The U.S. administration is relying partly on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to prevent what it claims are unfair trade practices and theft of intellectual property.

Abe smiled at the suggestion.

"Mutual trust between the two countries has reached an unprecedented level and their military ties are closer", Chinese state tabloid Global Times said in an August editorial.
