Forecasters say the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Wednesday, and approach the coast of the Carolinas in the hurricane warning area on Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, the US National Hurricane Centre said Hurricane Helene may be downgraded to a tropical storm.

At 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Depression Isaac was located near latitude 15.0 degrees north and longitude 65.5 degrees west.

In addition to hurricane-force winds, Florence was forecast to produce large swells and life-threatening rip currents from the U.S. East Coast to Bermuda.

The National Hurricane Center noted the following at 11 a.m.: "Florence is moving toward the northwest near 10 miles per hour (17 km/h)".

Met Office meteorologist Alan Deakin said: "Hurricane Helene may influence things in combination with an area of low pressure over the coming days".

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect as of Monday morning. Hurricane Helene was expected to weaken over the eastern Atlantic. Tropical Storm Isaac was expected to pass south of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba.

The turbulent weather is coming off the back of one of number of major storms now raging in the Atlantic, another of which, Hurricane Florence, has caused mass evacuations on the east coast of United States this week.
