Trump claims '3000 people did not die' in Puerto Rico hurricanes

Rosselló told CNN on Thursday that the Puerto Rican government is "confident" in the results of the study and that he has no reason to believe the estimate was part of an effort by Democrats to undermine the President.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz was a particularly aggressive critic of Trump in the days and weeks following the hurricane; her response to Trump's tweet today was no different.

"I don't think that's fair", said Huntsman, who added she also didn't think it was fair to compare Trump's action's to those of a dictator, something that was mentioned on the previous day's show. "I've been to Puerto Rico 7 times & saw devastation firsthand". I know he probably doesn't feel that way.

The president, with some justification, has said the situation in Puerto Rico after Maria was exacerbated by the island's remote location and pre-existing infrastructure issues, such as an antiquated power grid.

Trump on Thursday rejected that figure, arguing without evidence that the number was wrong and calling it a plot by Democrats to make him "look as bad as possible".

A U.S. government report published this month concluded that the federal response in Puerto Rico was hampered by a lack of trained staff as well as by major logistical challenges.

When a reporter asked Trump about Maria in the Oval Office, he swiftly unleashed fact-challenged defense of his response to the hurricane. "That is not fake news, Mr. President". Trump is so vain he thinks this is about him. Well, let me remind him about the Obama administration's response to Haiti.

Commissioned by Puerto Rico's governor, the study found that the authorities' initial figure of 64 deaths was likely as low due to officials strictly classifying only certain deaths - such as those caused by collapsing buildings, flying debris, floods and drownings - as caused by the hurricane.

They said about 4,600 people died in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of the hurricane from delayed medical care. "Those are just the facts of what happens when a awful hurricane hits an isolated place like an island".

"And so it makes any supplies going to Puerto Rico more expensive and any supplies leaving Puerto Rico more expensive", Hostin explained about the Jones Act.

Earlier this week, Trump called the response to Hurricane Maria an "unsung success".

Hurricane Maria hit a year ago as the Trump administration was feeling positive about the handling of massive hurricanes in Florida and Texas last summer.

Ron DeSantis, who won the GOP primary for governor with Trump's endorsement, also said the president is not correct.

Hostin blamed the Jones Act, saying it allowed the US government to "pillage and rape" the island since its inception in 1920, before asking why Trump didn't have an equal reaction to Maria as President Obama did to Haiti, which isn't even a USA territory.

Puerto Rico has been a USA territory since 1898. "They died because they did not have water; they died because they did not have food".

"His comments, to me, are ludicrous when you have known institutions that are respected for their research and their being able to be substantiated through rigorous scientific methods", Pacione-Zayas said.

"I cannot assure you that all the water is good", he said.

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico", Trump tweeted early Thursday morning.
