"Hurricane Florence is looking even bigger than anticipated". Rather than pushing up toward western Virginia, the storm's center is now predicted to move across the middle of SC.

Storm surges up to 3.9 meters (13 feet), the possibility of tornados and nearly a meter of rain in some areas of North and SC were expected when Hurricane Florence makes landfall late Thursday.

President Donald Trump has declared states of emergency for North and SC and Virginia, saying the U.S. government is "absolutely, totally prepared" for Florence. Within the storm, the waves are now 83 feet, says the National Hurricane Center. "We just need to figure out how to make it through".

A storm surge warning was issued from South Santee River, South Carolina, to Duck, North Carolina, and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, including the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers.

Axios: "The ties between Hurricane Florence and climate change" - "Hurricane Florence is a unique Atlantic hurricane, projected to stall out after hitting land and forecast to dump upwards of 2 feet of rain on several states, much like Hurricane Harvey did in Texas previous year". Matthew's floods were devastating for many areas of eastern North Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center's latest predictions Wednesday had Florence hovering off Southeast shores for more than two days before making landfall near the North Carolina/South Carolina border, perhaps not until Saturday.

The evacuations have prompted U-Haul to keep more than 90 of its storage facilities open so those leaving the path of the storm can use them for free, according to Elijah Mack, U-Haul Company of Coastal South Carolina president.

"This would be expected frankly for the safety of the workers", said North Carolina Pork Council chief executive Andy Curliss.

WCNC-TV meteorologist Brad Panovich told WFAE Morning Edition host Marshall Terry that the shift of Florence means more rain for the Charlotte area. As of now, Florence is due to make landfall very early Friday morning, somewhere in the Carolinas.

"There's really not a lot of good news", NOAA flight director Paul Flaherty said on "Shepard Smith Reporting".

The reconnaissance aircraft found that maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 125 miles per hour (205 km/h) with higher gusts. Owing to North Carolina's unique coastal geography, and with the extra nudge from the past 30 years of sea-level rise, Florence's surge could top 20 feet. By sunset Thursday and through most of Friday, our area will see the worst of the conditions, he said. Hurricane-force winds (74 mph and higher) are extending 70 miles out from the center and tropical-storm-force winds (39 to 73 mph) are being felt 175 miles out.
