The latest storm track released by the National Weather Service shows Florence moving inland Friday morning as a weaker hurricane, and possibly continuing west into central North Carolina Saturday morning.

The governors of North and SC and Virginia declared states of emergency far ahead of the approaching storm.

Maximum sustained winds were nearly 85 miles per hour Monday morning, the hurricane center said.

"Large swells affecting Bermuda and portions of the US East Coast will continue this week".

Hurricane Florence is growing in size and strength as it barrels toward the Southeastern U.S. for an expected landfall in the Carolinas later this week as an "extremely unsafe hurricane", according to the National Hurricane Center.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says that Hurricane Isaac is located about 1150 miles east of the Windward Islands.

That means, she said, that the Wilmington region is going to be affected by what she said is going to be a major hurricane that could reach category 4 strength, which means maximum sustained winds of 130 to 156 miles per hour.

The parking lot has been full for three days at the Ace Hardware store in coastal Calabash, North Carolina, where manager Tom Roberts said he sold 150 gas cans in two hours Monday, along with generators, plywood, rope, manual can openers, sand bags and a plethora of other items.

On Wednesday Russian officials dismissed May's comments apportioning blame for the Skripal attack to the military spy agency. Security cameras filmed the suspects near Skripal's house, and traces of Novichok were found in their London hotel room.

Florence had reached Category 3 strength earlier Monday, but data from hurricane hunter aircraft indicate the storm is quickly getting stronger as it moves over warm Atlantic waters. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles from the center. "Due to these conditions, Superintendent David Hallac is strongly urging all beach visitors to stay out of the Atlantic Ocean until unsafe conditions subside".

"These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents", the National Hurricane Center said.

Cooper and his counterparts in South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland all declared states of emergency.

Residents in North Carolina and other East Coast states should pay attention to the storm and begin to think about hurricane plans. SC ordered an estimated 1 million people to evacuate its coast.

The European model paints the most aggressive forecast for central Georgia and shows wind gusts between 30 and 40 miles per hour for Sunday as the remnants of Florence drift to the south over SC.

Landfall, at this early point, is expected to be late this week in a zone from Charleston to Cape Hatteras, with wind and rain possible across most of the Carolinas.

"Everyone in North Carolina needs to keep a close eye on Florence and take steps now to get ready for impacts later this week", Cooper said.
