The administration has asserted that Trump's tariffs would force China to trade on more favorable terms with the United States. For example, the proposed tariffs cover Apple Watch, which has become the top-selling smart-watch in the USA and globally. On Friday President Trump said he was prepared to punish China with additional duties, this time on $267 billion in Chinese goods.

That could help reignite US demands that Beijing narrow its trade gap, which has temporarily been overshadowed by their clash over complaints China steals or pressures foreign companies to hand over technology.

Canada Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said United States and Canadian technical officials worked through the night on a number of issues. "Can't let that happen".

"Nobody has ever done what I've done".

The two sides are still maintaining working communications after bilateral talks at the vice-ministerial level took place late last month in Washington, and any pressure the U.S. applies will be ineffective in its dealings with China, Gao said.

The company noted it spent US$50 billion with 9,000 USA suppliers in its most recent fiscal year, including Texas-based chip firm Finisar Corp and Kentucky-based Corning Inc. Now we've added another $200 billion.

"I hate to do this, but behind that ($200 billion tariff list) there is another $267 billion ready to go on short notice if I want", Trump told reporters.

"That totally changes the equation", Trump said.

"I don't think this magnitude of tariffs has been priced into the markets", Ms Lara Rhame, chief United States economist at FS Investments, told Bloomberg Television.

But while moving its manufacturing operations to the U.S. would allow it to skip the tariffs, Apple's products likely wouldn't be any cheaper.

The first batch of proposed tariffs would not affect iPhone production, but if the second larger batch is introduced, mobile phone production would be hit.

Tariffs could be used to shift negative attention away from the Trump administration, according to Height.

The plea by scores of USA retail firms also called out "millions of U.S.jobs" in the industry's global value chains, "including those in research and design, supply chain, manufacturing, compliance, logistics and retail" that they warn would be put at risk if a new 10 percent or 25 percent tax were imposed.

Away from trade developments and emerging market turmoil, attention will be directed towards the U.S.jobs report coming out later today which will offer fresh insight into the health of the US employment sector. "The Chinese, you know, may find themselves more isolated if they don't come into the global process", Mr Kudlow said.

For the Trump administration, Friday began with sunny signs for the labor market before Trump's hawkish trade-war rhetoric clouded the outlook. In Beijing, Professor Hong Tao from the Beijing Technology and Business University dismissed Mr Trump's latest threat as an intimidation tactic.

That list includes some consumer products, like cameras, luggage and tires and they'd be subject to tariffs of 10-25 percent.

"Our concern with these tariffs is that the USA will be hardest hit, and that will result in lower US growth and competitiveness and higher prices for USA consumers", the company said.
