Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the rapid police response probably prevented many more casualties.

Police in the USA city of Cincinnati say they've responded to an active shooter situation at a building downtown.

The shooting began just after 9 a.m. ET. Officials have not yet revealed a motive in the attack.

"I looked behind me and saw the guy - he shot and then he shot again", Michael Richardson, who works in the bank building, told The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Police earlier characterized it as an "active shooter/officer involved shooting incident" in a tweet, but did not elaborate.

The local Telugu Association of North America office said they plan to help Kandepi's father.

Fifth Third Bank is one of Cincinnati's dominant financial institutions with 121 local branches. And Cranley said things "could have been much, much worse" without it. "The shots got closer and closer and closer and closer and that's all you can think about is, I'm next, I'm next, I'm next", Janetta Cook, a bakery worker, was quoted by CNN saying.

Bank employees sheltered in situ for an hour or more as officers swept the building and cordoned off several downtown city blocks.

It's unclear if the gunman shot himself or was shot by officers, police said. We could quickly see there was a large police presence and could see them blocking Fountain Square.
