Kolkata bridge collapse: Death toll rises to two

According to a report, transport services connecting the vast areas in the south-western part of the city and South 24 Parganas district were severely affected, following the tragic incident.

One more body was recovered from the debris of the collapsed Majerhat railway overbridge on Wednesday evening, taking the toll to two.

A Kolkata Traffic Police officer said that traffic movement through Diamond Harbour (DH) Road in Taratala area has been suspended.

"There could be a few trapped underneath the collapsed bridge".

This was the third bridge collapse in the city since 2013. "We are trying our best", an official of the rescue team added. "Train services of Circular Railway from Dum Dum to Majerhat has also resumed this morning", he said.

Even as rains and low light made the search and rescue task hard, the rescuers tried to drill the concrete slabs, using sophisticated cameras, and engaged sniffer dogs to ensure anybody trapped under the rubble could be found.

The injured have been rushed to the nearby SSKM hospital.

NDRF DG Sanjay Kumar said earthmovers are being used for clearing the area.

The rescue work continued amidst occasional rain as the evening drew to an end and additional lighting arrangements have been made to facilitate the rescue work at night.

Opposition parties blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress government and said its "callousness towards the fix of old bridges" was the main reason for the collapse.

The 50-year-old bridge, located adjacent to the Majherhat railway station, was maintained by the state public works department (PWD).

CM Mamata Banerjee has said a probe would be conducted by a committee headed by Chief Secretary Malay De to find out the cause of the collapse.

Trinamool Congress lawmaker Derek O'Brien tweeted, "Watching scenes of Majerhat bridge #Kolkata collapse".

An under-construction flyover had collapsed in crowded Burrabazar area, the wholesale business hub of the city, on March 31, 2016, claiming 26 lives.

The locals in Kolkata cited the lack of maintenance as the reason behind the collapse of the 40-year-old bridge Majerhat bridge on Diamond Harbour Road in south Kolkata.

Refuting the opposition charges, state Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said the state government has taken enough steps to fix old bridges which were in a dilapidated state during the Left Front rule.
