High-stakes confirmation hearings kick off Tuesday in the Senate for Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Trump's pick to succeed swing-vote Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Before serving in the Bush White House, Kavanaugh had been a key deputy to Independent Counsel Ken Starr and advocated for tough questioning of President Bill Clinton about his sexual encounters with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

Republicans have dismissed Democrats' concerns over lack of access to portions of the record on Kavanaugh's background, arguing their criticism is politically motivated.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) blasted the Trump administration's decision to withhold some of Kavanaugh's records, referring to it as a "Friday night document massacre".

Democrats have tried - unsuccessfully - to delay the Kavanaugh hearings, citing everything from Michael Cohen accusing Trump of criminal wrongdoing in court to the White House's decision to withhold 100,000 pages of records from Kavanaugh's service in the George W. Bush White House. Dick Durbin, (D-Ill.), said yesterday on "Fox News Sunday".

He added the remaining documents not included also presented functions of the executive office, which are traditionally kept confidential as part of a president's constitutional privileges.

"Republicans in the Senate and the president of the United States are colluding to keep Judge Kavanaugh's records secret and trying to hide their actions from the American people by doing it on the Friday night of a holiday weekend", Schumer said. In a release, the committee pointed out that Grassley had promised to facilitate the release of another set of documents, now available only to members, if senators keep their requests targeted to specific documents.

"Democrats have more than enough information to understand that this is a highly qualified jurist that should be the next Supreme Court justice", Wisconsin U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican, said in an interview on ABC's "This Week".

"This may be the latest and most dramatic breach in the process, but we already knew it was a sham, broken at every step along the way", said Kang, who is now with Demand Justice, an advocacy group working to defeat Kavanaugh and other conservative judicial nominees.

Republicans, who hold just a 51-seat majority in the Senate, are quick to point to the public career of Kavanaugh and the hundreds of thousands of documents provided that show his stances on different issues.

The opinion that Roe v. Wade is "settled law" doesn't mean it can't be overturned by the Supreme Court, Sen.
