French actor Gerard Depardieu is being investigated over accusations of rape and sexual assault by a Paris prosecutor, according to a judicial source.

The Paris public prosecutor's office has reportedly opened an inquiry after a complaint was lodged on Monday in Aix-en-Provence, located in Southern France.

A lawyer said the French film star denies the allegations.

A controversial and larger-than-life character, he became the very face of French cinema due to roles in films such as such as "Cyrano de Bergerac" for which won best actor at the Cannes film festival and was nominated for an Oscar.

The actress was "devastated" by the alleged attacks, her agent was quoted as saying by French digital news service BFMTV.

The accuser has filed a report detailing her claims against the 69-year-old Jean de Florette and Green Card star. "The case was passed on to the Paris prosecutor", the source told Reuters.

A lawyer for Depardieu dismissed the accusations. "But we are also clear-eyed enough not to confuse an awkward attempt to pick someone up with a sexual attack", the letter continued, CBS News reports.

Temime added that Depardieu is "shaken" by the allegations, which are against "everything he is and respects".

Depardieu, 69, is France's biggest global star and has made more than 180 films. He has more than 200 credits to his name and recently starred in Netflix's French political series Marseille.
