In total, Simon wrote more than 30 plays and earned 17 Tony nominations with three wins.

In the career that followed, many of his plays - including Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple and many others - were so successful that his name became "synonymous with Broadway comedy and commercial success in the theater for decades".

One of the formative experiences I ever had as a young theatergoer was seeing Mike Nichols's original Broadway staging of Odd Couple with Walter Matthau and Art Carney as it tried out on its way to NY in my home town of Washington, D.C., when I was a teenage ticket-taker at the National Theater.

A statement from his reps said, "Neil Simon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright, died last night at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City". He is survived by wife Elaine Joyce and his three daughters from different marriages, Evans said.

Much of his work centered on the everyday struggles of the middle-classes, which he used to explore what he called "domestic wars" and inter-family conflict. There's no more money anyone can pay me that I need. "You put that behavior in conflict and you're in business", Simon told The Paris Review in 1992. Redford also appeared in the 1967 hit movie version opposite Jane Fonda.

The play remains one of Simon's most durable and popular works.

"Dilemma is the key word".

The 2014 Kingsmill Champion wasn't kidding, as she picked up her second runner-up finish of the year last week in Indianapolis. The American still had a chance to close out the victory in regulation but missed a birdie attempt at the 72nd hole.

Perhaps Simon's most infamous production was the critically panned Rose's Dilemma, which opened at off-Broadway's non-profit Manhattan Theatre Club in December 2003. He was raised mostly by his strong-willed mother, Mamie, and mentored by his older brother, Danny, who nicknamed his younger sibling, Doc.

Simon gained worldwide fame in the 1960s for stage and screen comedies including The Odd Couple and Barefoot In The Park. He deserves a second look from a new generation of directors and actors who might unlock the artist who moved so many Americans to laughter and even tears over an extraordinary run. As the Simon assembly line quickly accelerated, his hit plays begat hit movies, which then begat television sitcoms, which sometimes begat additional television sitcoms. "It was a privilege knowing him".

According to TMZ, Simon died early Sunday morning after having been on life support for some time; he had a failing kidney, as well as Alzheimer's Disease and dementia.

Simon made a trilogy of autobiographical plays that included Brighton Beach Memoirs in 1983, Biloxi Blues in 1985 and Broadway Bound in 1986.

Broderick is now a celebrated stage actor married to film star Sarah Jessica Parker.

Simon was married five times, twice to the same woman.
