Notice that coconut oil is not included in the list of fats that are the smartest, healthiest options.

According to Dr Karin Michels lecture at the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health, coconut oil is 'pure poison'. "This disconnect between lay and expert opinion can be attributed to the marketing of coconut oil in the popular press", the report stated.

"There has been speculation that some of the saturated fat present in coconut oil may be better for us than other saturated fats, but so far there is not enough good-quality research to provide us with a definitive answer", BHF dietitian Victoria Taylor said.

It has also replaced many oils used in cooking.

Michels' claims follow similar remarks passed by the American Heart Association, which highlighted the dangers of consuming excessive amounts of coconut oil. As such, coconut oil works as a great remedy for atopic dermatitis and enhances the barrier of the skin as well as protects you from UV radiation.

While Michels doesn't describe other "superfoods" like acai, chia seeds or matcha as harmful, at most she considers them ineffective due to the fact that, in most cases, the nutrients they're touted for are available just as readily in other foods that are more easily accessible such as carrots, cherries, and apricots. The American Heart Association recommends the average person only consume around 11 grams of saturated fat per day, or about 5 percent of your total daily calories.

As it turns out, Michels' assessment of coconut oil is a lot closer to what the scientific evidence has to say about the fat than what acolytes claim - though "poison" may be a bit of stretch. The group said to "opt for naturally occurring unhydrogenated vegetable oils such as canola, safflower, sunflower or olive oil". "People think of the benefits of coconut oil, thinking it has fewer calories, helps you lose weight, some people like the flavor of it, but we still have to consider it as a saturated fat", she said. Most global dietary guidelines recommend enjoying saturated fats in moderation.

Coconut oil is 82 percent saturated fat, and this word of warning caused people all over the country to swear off their coconut oil smoothies and stir-fries.

Most researchers agree that olive or linseed oil can form an important part of a healthy diet. Diets high in saturated fat are known to be linked to increased risk of heart disease, stroke and high cholesterol. That study actually injected rats with a synthetic chemical resembling the capric acid found in coconut oil.
