Hurricane Lane has now become a Category 5 hurricane, which means that it is likely to cause catastrophic damage with winds 157 miles per hour or above.

According to data provided by the center, Lane's expected to be about 325 miles south-southeast of Kailua-Kona and 275 miles south-southeast of South Point by 6 a.m. today.

The strongest hurricane to ever threaten Hawaii is bearing down on the islands as a Category 5 storm. Roofs and walls will collapse.

The central Pacific gets fewer hurricanes than other regions, with about only four or five named storms a year, and Hawaii rarely gets hit.

Damaging tropical storm force winds could begin as early as Wednesday night in Maui County, with risky hurricane force winds possible starting Thursday, the weather service said. A hurricane watch was in effect for Oahu and Kauai.

Hurricane Lane strengthened to a category 5 storm on Tuesday as it headed toward Hawaii, where residents prepared for "life threatening" winds and flooding when it hits the USA islands this week, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

But Hurricane Lane looks poised to bring much more significant impacts to the state, as the forecast puts the storm very close to the islands, with a direct landfall is possible later this week.

Depending on the severity of the storm, commanding officers can decide to add additional mooring and storm lines, as well as drop the anchor and disconnect shore power cables. Rain of this magnitude raises the risk of flash flooding and landslides. Total rainfall amounts of more than 20 inches are possible, the National Weather Service said.
