It is unsurprisingly going to be a close call once again between the three contenders, but as only one can be crowned as the victor, here's a run down of each candidate and why they should be in contention for the award.

Modric and Ronaldo - who has taken the honour in the last two years - won the Champions League for the third season in a row with Real Madrid last term, with the Portugal star, now at Juventus, finishing as top scorer in the competition for the sixth year running.

The 33-year-old averaged a goal a game last season, scoring 44 goals in as many appearances. 34 of his goals came in 36 appearances in La Liga whilst he netted six times in ten Champions League matches, whilst contributing 18 assists from those 45 matches.

The former Real Madrid star will face serious competition for the award from Croatia worldwide Luka Modric and Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah.

The UEFA award for the best Europe-based player last season won't be won by a World Cup champion from France.

Now the Juventus star, Cristiano Ronaldo is a frequent victor of UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award and if he takes this honor home again, it will mark his hat-trick of doing so.
