Trump says his White House counsel not a 'rat' like Nixon's

Mueller is investigating whether the president sought to obstruct justice as well as whether his campaign colluded with Russia's covert effort to sway the 2016 presidential election in Trump's favor.

President Donald Trump "has got a real problem" after the latest revelations regarding White House counsel Don McGahn's interviews with special counsel investigators, according to John Dean, who served in the same role for President Richard Nixon.

While Trump believes McGahn is not loyal enough, McGahn has called the president "King Kong" behind his back because of his temper tantrums, the Times is reporting. President Trump lashed out on Twitter and called Dean a "rat" and said that McGahn was nothing like him.

"Mr. McGahn answered the Special Counsel team's questions fulsomely and honestly", William Burck said, explaining that the President did not ask Mr. McGahn to refrain from discussing any matters.

Twenty minutes later, Trump's Twitter rant about the length of time Mueller spent with McGahn began.

Dean tweeted a reply, saying he had "trouble using the title Mr President for someone installed by Putin".

The thesis of the New York Times story is that Mr. McGahn cooperated in a way that could hurt Donald Trump in order to protect himself and because he doesn't trust the President.

Trump says he allowed McGahn and others to testify.

At the tail end of a Sunday morning tweet storm, President Trump compared Robert Mueller's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 election to Sen.

He also proclaimed Sunday that "truth isn't truth" while attempting to explain his reluctance to have Trump sit down for an interview with Mueller's team.

The report said the president had wrongly believed that McGahn would act as his personal lawyer and exclusively defend his interests to investigators.

Trump also declined to say whether he might strip Mueller of his security clearance, as he did last week to former CIA Director John Brennan, who had repeatedly criticized Trump's handling of foreign policy and national security issues. In the 1950s, McCarthy claimed that communist and Soviet spies had infiltrated the government, going on to accuse some - without evidence - of treason.

In another message, the president suggested that the collusion and obstruction for which he is under investigation were actually committed by Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party.

The president has an acquaintance in common with McCarthy: the rightwing lawyer Roy Cohn, who worked for the senator before mentoring Trump as he rose to prominence in NY.

"The meeting was originally for the goal of getting information about Clinton", he said, adding that the Trump team did not know that Natalia Veselnitskaya was Russian - even though emails later released by Trump Jr. show that she had been described as a "Russian government attorney". "Rigged Witch Hunt!" Trump later wrote.
